Cairo’s streets witnessed two graffiti murals being added to its burgeoning street art scene from the famous German photo realist and graffiti artist, Andreas von Chrzanowski, or as he’s more popularly known on the street, CASE. Originally invited along with his crew Ma’Claim (or ‘My Part) for Goethe-Institute Alexandria’s ongoing project “Graffiti: Style, History, Experience” project, CASE decided to stay on and complete a mission of his own, part duty and part personal. His duty, or rather what he feels is a personal obligation, was to bring his rendition of Khaled Said from Berlin to Cairo. CASE was the creative mastermind behind the Khaled Said portrait on two slabs from the Berlin Wall and his aim in Cairo was to recreate this same portrait, but, this time, adding another martyr, Mina...

Travel video about destination Cairo in Egypt. Cairo is a world metropolis and tantamount to being an open-air museum. The Nile divides it in two and the centre of the city contains modern shops and office buildings in close proximity to medieval churches and ancient mosques. The Khan el-Khalili bazaar is like something from a bygone age and where the Orient combines with the Middle Ages, 'A Thousand And One Nights' amid Islamic Cairo. Goods inspired by pharaohs Tutankhamen and Nefertiti are in constant demand and it's where haggling is the norm. The bazaar is a colorful place with smoking hookahs, exotic carpets and musical instruments as well as a huge array of herbs and spices. Abu Serga is the city's oldest church and dates back to Fatima times. It was built on the ruins of an even o...

Travel video about destination Cairo in Egypt. Cairo is a cultural melting pot and with a population of sixteen million it is the largest metropolis on the African continent. The Egyptian people refer to their capital city as Um Al Dunya, ‘Mother of the World’. The history of the Sankt Sergius Church dates back to Abu Serga in the 5th century A.D. Legend has it that it was built on the site where the Holy Family once sought refuge. Thus, the richly decorated church is a popular Christian place of pilgrimage and is situated in Fustat in the middle of Koptic, the oldest district in Cairo. The spacious Mamelucks Necropolis is unique within the Islamic world. Here, instead of conventional graves, entire houses were built for the dead. Within the necropolis the mosques and mausoleums of the Mam...

Travel video about destination Egypt. Egypt is a land of monumental temples, gigantic pyramids, the River Nile and the mysterious Sphinx: 5000 years of history.Founded by Alexander The Great in 332 B.C., the city of Alexandria is located in the Nile Delta and it was here that Caesar and Mark Anthony fell under Cleopatra’s spell. Only in Cairo will you get a taxi with a Karaoke machine in it! Although our driver seems to think that all westerners want to sing along with Celine Dion and that Titanic thing, lol. The best thing is that he was using the remote control for it whilst driving at breakneck speeds in heavy, fast traffic...changing lanes as though he was in a Formula One race...a normal drive home then, lol.

The Fine Arts and Arts History (FAAH) department at AUB held a lecture entitled: "WHAT IS TO BE DONE WITH ART EDUCATION?" by Shady El-Noshokaty (AUC, Cairo), Walid Sadek (AUB, Beirut), Christine Tohme (Ashkal Alwan, Beirut) Moderator: Angela Harutyunyan (AUB, Beirut) There has been a growing rupture between studio arts education in the context of fine arts academies and contemporary art production and representation since at least the early 1970s. This rupture has for the most part been situated within the polarizing debates between instruction in skills designated to the domain of the fine arts academy and conceptual practices that largely rely on the de-skilling of craftsmanship. In North America and the UK the crisis in art education was addressed by primarily designing art programs o...
Location: Goethe Institut, Cairo, Egypt Date: December 8th 2012 This panel discussion explored the role that artists and arts organizations are playing in the development of Downtown Cairo. A direct dialogue between representatives of Al Ismailia Real Estate Developments and The American University in Cairo with artists and cultural organizations currently staking out cultural outposts downtown (including Townhouse Gallery, Cimatheque, and CIC), the panel re-examined the classic appropriation of artists as catalysts for urban regeneration by real-estate developers seeking future gentrification. How might things play out differently in Cairo? How is Cairo different from other cities, such as New York and Beirut, where such cycles of gentrification have taken place? What role may the underut...

As part of "the Last Farewell" exhbition, Hany Rashed presented his last piece by sharing a live performance, revealing his life story since 1993 until now. The Last Farewell Solo Exhibition by Hany Rashed. *Let me tell you the story of my salvation, from the ghost who chased me for 24 years. The ghost who inspired my art, and now I draw to run away from it; to exorcise my ghost. The ghost’s name is Hadeer. she is 11 months old. She manifests in my memory in four scenes: I witness her birth in a taxi, and I cut her umbilical cord. I witness her pain on a hospital bed, between life and death. I witness her death, the result of a simple hiccup; and despite my plea to hold onto life; she chose death, clinging onto a frivolous misstep to leave us, saddened by what she had lived through. Her...
